Web Marketing Myth
#1 “Site Traffic Equals Sales”
Why on earth would a website development, promotion and marketing company
say that traffic doesn’t necessarily result in sales? If you’re a small
business owner trying to promote your digital sliver of the vast World Wide
Web, you have no doubt received relentless volleys of spam emails promising
tens of thousands of visitors. Sure sounds tempting....
Lets try an example.
Assume companies A and B are online businesses in the same geographical
area and industry. Which website would you
rather own?
Company A’s site that receives 100 visits a month or
Company B’s site that receives 5,000 visits a month
Yes, it’s a trick question. Although common business sense would lead you to answer
Company B – more is better right? – but the true answer depends on which site brings
in more customers, clients or sales. The number of site visits to actual
cash spending customers is often referred to as the conversion ratio. Most run-by-spam
“marketers” rarely (if ever) tout their conversion ratios. So, the next
time you’re out on the golf course and your buddy is bragging about their
superior website traffic numbers…just ask him about what really matters
- green dollar bills - aka conversion.
Small Business Web Marketing
Tips
Off Line Promotion and Advertising of Your Website
The popular Google search engine has over 4 Billion websites in its directory
and is growing by untold numbers every business day. Depending on your industry,
your website may be competing with thousands or even
millions of other websites. And quite naturally, these other websites also feel
that their site deserves the #1 ranking.
How do you get noticed in the crowd?
One frequently overlooked source of website visitors is
offline advertising.
Your website should be integrated with and complement your overall marketing
strategy. The importance of “off-line promotion” such as placing your
WWW
on business cards, stationary, brochures and advertisements is often overlooked
by small businesses.
Yes, I can tell you are unimpressed…..But before you hit the back button….consider
the following:
A person visiting your website from the www on your business card
is in all likelihood someone you have met face to face or a referral from an existing
client/customer.
This person did not have to sift through hundreds of search engine results
to find you.…i.e. was the site dallaswidget.com or widgetsdallas.com or
dallas-widgets.net
This person obviously has some interest in your product or service to take
the time to visit your website.
Sounds like someone you want to drop by
your site...
